Truth is stranger than fiction

We've had a couple of cute conversations with our daughter lately.  She understands the fact that I have a baby in my tummy and has even (thank heavens) accepted that it is a boy baby. (The first time we told her she threw herself on the couch and cried that it was "just a baby." I think she was sleep deprived that day...) She's heard the heart beat at my midwife appointments and thinks that's pretty cool. She's even felt him kick, and really liked that.  So, she understands the concept and has started asking some questions. Don't worry, nothing scary yet. ;)  We did have a conversation one day during our snack that went something like this:

E: Mommy, how does the baby eat?
Me: Well... he eats through his belly button.
E: *look of total disbelief that I could think her so foolish as to fall for that one. Other wise known as the "yeah, right" look*

We also have our weak-sauce excuse for a garden behind our patio; it actually brings me great happiness and E LOVES to water the herbs, which she has claimed for "her garden."  She knows that watering things will make them grow, but I lack the patience to start plants from seeds, and it just doesn't make sense to buy all those seeds when I only want one of each plant.  So, I buy starters which we then plant in the pots.

Yesterday I cut up a cantaloupe.  I wasn't super tidy about it and some seeds got left around the sink.  This morning I put E on the counter so she could help me make waffles.  While up there she found a cantaloupe seed.  Impressively, she did recognize it as a seed.

E: Mommy, I found a seed!  Where did it come from?
Me: Well, that's from the cantaloupe we were eating yesterday.
E: What do you do with it.
Jared: Well, you could take that seed and put it in the dirt and it would grow. And when it got big enough, it would make a cantaloupe.
E: HeHee! Daddy, that's silly!

Apparently next year we need to do some seed starters just to make a point...
